What Is an AI Visibility Score (and How Is It Different from SEO)?

Last updated: July 2026

An AI visibility score measures how ready your website is to be read, understood, and cited by AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Claude. Where an SEO score predicts your position in a list of links, an AI visibility score predicts something more binary: when an engine composes a single answer for your buyer's question, are you quotable enough to be in it? The two overlap on fundamentals like crawlability, but they diverge exactly where it hurts — plenty of sites that rank on page one of Google are unquotable to answer engines, and never learn why. You can see your own score with a free 30-second scan.

What does an AI visibility score actually measure?

A credible score audits the signals an answer engine evaluates between receiving a query and deciding whom to cite. At Coderax we group them into five categories:

The output that matters isn't the number — it's the ranked list of what's failing and why it costs you citations.

How is that different from an SEO score?

The mechanics being scored are different because the systems behave differently. A search engine ranks: it returns ten links and lets the human judge. An answer engine synthesizes: it retrieves a few pages, extracts facts, and writes one answer with two to five citations. So SEO scores weight things that win rankings and clicks — keywords, backlinks, Core Web Vitals, title tags. An AI visibility score weights things that survive extraction: whether facts about your product are stated plainly, marked up in schema, corroborated elsewhere, and shaped so a model can lift them without guessing. SEO asks "will you rank?" AI visibility asks "can you be quoted?"

Why doesn't a high Google ranking guarantee AI visibility?

Because ranking rewards persuading humans and citation rewards informing machines. The classic failure mode: a polished landing page, ranking #1 for its category, whose headline is a benefit metaphor, whose pricing is behind a "Talk to sales" wall, and whose content renders only after JavaScript runs. Humans convert on it; a retrieval model extracts almost nothing it can quote. Meanwhile a competitor's plain FAQ page — mediocre in rankings — states facts an engine can cite verbatim, and becomes the recommendation. This is also why getting recommended by Perplexity is a different project from ranking on Google, even though the foundations overlap.

What's a good score?

On Coderax's 0–100 scale, most B2B SaaS sites that have never audited for AI land in the 30s to 50s — not because they're bad sites, but because nobody has checked these signals before. Above 70, engines can reliably read and cite you, and the remaining gap is usually depth and corroboration rather than technical blockers. Our sample report is a real audit of a site scoring 44/100, which is a fair picture of the unoptimized middle. Read your score for direction, not for vanity: a 45 with three crawlability failures and a 45 with weak content need entirely different work.

How do you improve an AI visibility score?

The pattern across nearly every audit we run:

  1. Clear the technical blockers first — crawler access, rendering, robots and sitemap hygiene. These gate everything else.
  2. Make the facts extractable — plain-language positioning and schema markup on the pages that carry your product facts.
  3. Add the citable surface — FAQ and comparison content shaped around the questions your buyers actually ask.
  4. Then earn corroboration — presence on the third-party sources engines already trust for your category.

Which items apply to your site, and in what order, is what the audit itself determines — the free scan shows the category scores, and the $29 full audit turns them into a prioritized fix list you can hand to a developer.

FAQ

What is a good AI visibility score?

On Coderax's 0–100 scale, most unoptimized B2B SaaS sites land in the 30s to 50s. Above 70 means answer engines can reliably read and cite you; the gap to 100 is usually corroboration and content depth rather than technical blockers. The absolute number matters less than which category is dragging it down.

Is an AI visibility score the same as an SEO score?

No. SEO scores predict how well a page can rank in a list of links; an AI visibility score measures whether an answer engine can retrieve your pages, extract clear facts from them, and quote them with confidence. Sites routinely score well on one and poorly on the other.

How do I check my AI visibility score?

Run Coderax's free scan: it crawls your site and returns a scored breakdown across crawlability, structured data, content signals, entity clarity, and llms.txt readiness in about 30 seconds, with no signup. The $29 full audit adds the complete prioritized fix list.
